Artists In Conversation

Cannupa Hanska Luger & Cara Romero on Indigenous Futurism

“Listen Until You Hear” Exhibition at Fotografiska© Leandro Justen

About the Event

Following her special installation of recent portraits presented by Fotografiska New York at PHOTOFAIRS, renowned photographer Cara Romero joins multidisciplinary artist Cannupa Hanska Luger in a discussion on Indigenous Futurism and its representation through varying art forms.

An enrolled citizen of the Chemehuevi Indian Tribe, Romero’s unique photographic practice fuses time-honored and culturally specific symbols with 21st-century ideas. In the same vein, Luger’s work blends customary and industrial materials in his sculptural and video works to reclaim and reframe a more accurate version of 21st-century Native American culture and its powerful global relevance.

Join us as we welcome both artists to the stage to share their unique perspectives on Indigenous representation while exploring their individual practices.

Guests will have the chance to preview Romero’s limited-run installation in The Loft, Indigenous Futurity, (https://www.fotografiska.com/nyc/exhibitions/cara-romero/)which officially opens to the public on September 12th.

Museum admission is included with event tickets; arrive early to explore Luger’s work currently on view in our group exhibition with For Freedoms, Listen Until You Hear (https://www.fotografiska.com/nyc/exhibitions/listen-until-you-hear/), and enjoy Terry O’Neill, Stars (https://www.fotografiska.com/nyc/exhibitions/terry-oneill/)in its final days!
